Mixed-martial-arts pro Ronda Rousey grew up with a strong role model. “My mom [AnnMaria De Mars] was the world champion in judo [in 1984],” Rousey says. “Seeing a world champion walking through your living room makes you feel like anything is possible. The example she set made me aim high.” Rousey mastered judo in her teens, winning a bronze medal in the sport at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. She scored numerous victories in her next chapter as a UFC Women’s Bantamweight Championship fighter and recently fulfilled a childhood dream by joining WWE—and winning her in-ring début at WrestleMania 34. Through it all, staying mentally and physically strong has remained a priority. “If you’re thinking about how you look while you’re working out, you’re not working out hard enough,” she says. “I think it’s good for girls to get grungy and sweaty and let themselves … just not be perfect all the time, you know?”
