Karolina Kurkova Lipstick

Fall’s crisp morning air feels as right for layering on clothing as it does for lipstick—but that’s not to say that a boldly colored mouth doesn’t face its own set of obstacles in the colder months: dry skin and feathery lines among them. When it comes to wearing lipstick without giving in to the compulsive, anxiety-driven need to check on it as often as your Instagram feed, backstage makeup artist Diane Kendal says prepping your canvas should be your main focus. “It’s always good to use a lip scrub or a soft toothbrush to get rid of any dry skin,” says Kendal, who further insures a smooth surface by applying lip balm for a few minutes to hydrate, then removing it. Once readied, she instructs: “To set the lipstick, apply one layer of a long-lasting formula, blot it, then reapply” to remove the extra moisture that causes bleeding.

From the most nourishing treatment oil to the richest plum lipstick that refuses to budge, here are our picks for the seven products that will keep you smiling this fall.
