    1. Mix Textiles

Wearing all one color or all one material can look buttoned up and chic. But mixing textiles is an easy way to make your outfit more interesting. Exhibit A: this show attendee, who wore a silk pant and bag with a linen coat and cashmere sweater.

    2. Forget The Seasons

As long as you’re comfortable, forget the term “seasonably appropriate.” That could mean light, floral dresses in the winter or dark, heavy colors in the summer.

    3. Go Full Pattern

Don’t be afraid to invest in a patterned pantsuit. A casual vintage tee or solid-colored sweater is a perfect compliment to the all-over print.

    4. 50 Shades of…

Net-a-Porter’s Lisa Aiken is the arbiter of all things chic. Take a cue from this look: choose your favorite color and deck yourself out in multiple shades of it (she chose white).

    5. Red. Boots.

Trends come and go, which is why we always suggest investing in staples and going to fast-fashion retailers for items that might be “over” after one season. Red boots, however, have been going strong for a full year at this point. So find yourself a pair.

    6. Add a Metallic

Just because it’s daytime doesn’t mean you can’t add some flair. A metallic accessory, be it a shoe or a bag, gives an otherwise classic outfit the perfect amount of “look at me.”

    7. Try an Unexpected Color

Black, navy, even pink are all colors that tons of fashion editors wear head-to-toe. Try an unexpected shade, like mint green or marigold.

    8. Go Bright

Scared of brights? Make color an accent (rather than the only thing you notice) by paring it with neutrals.

    9. Find a Fancy Puffer

It’s cold in New York in February. Don’t be a hero. There are tons of puffers that are street style friendly–ones with faux fur, ones in fantastic colors–that are worth your investment.

    10. Look For Details

Detailing matters. Look for a coat with an amazing patterned lining, or add a surprising pop of color to an all-neutral outfit.

  • Szymon Brzóska for InStyle

    11. Opt for Winter White

All black is easy. Try varying shades of white (extra points if you mix textures and prints).

    12. Go Loco for Logos

Listen up: Logomania is not dead. Still, it’s best in small doses, like this playful Balenciaga bag.

    13. Get Shiny

Matrix-like materials such as latex, PVC, and patent leather are everywhere these days. A pair of black pants is an easy entry into the trend.

    14. Add a Belt

Adding a belt to an outfit can be the difference between “cute” and “fabulous! Omg! I want it now!” We’re obsessed with this one from Loewe that could be worn with a T-shirt, blazer, or long black dress.

    15. Don’t Be Afraid of the Unexpected

Mixing unexpected patterns and prints is an easy way to stand out.

    16. Utilize the Cinch

Play with proportions by utilizing the power of the waist cinch.

    17. Emblished Jeans

    18. Don’t Be One Thing

You don’t need to sign up for one style. Love your boho bag but also obsessed with your rocker tee and business-savvy suit? You can wear it all together as long as you’re in a great heel.

    19. Give Athleisure a Fair Chance

Do you find yourself secretly jealous of everyone wearing sweatpants in a dressed-up way? Give the trend a try. You’ll probably never look back.

    20. Try Out a Faux Fur

Thanks to brands like Gucci and Michael Kors, faux-fur is finally chic. This well priced and very warm alternative to the “real” thing will not leave you disappointed.

    21. Wear a Crazy Trend

You don’t need to spend a bajillion dollars to test out a crazy trend. You can wear dad sneakers without spending your rent at Balenciaga or Louis Vuitton.

    22. Pattern Junky

Break up multiple patterns by adding in heavier pieces in neutral colors. This look works because the heavy black knit breaks up the layers of leopard print.

    23. Go Sheer

Sheer? In the winter? What a perfect way to show off your favorite tights.

    24. Update a Classic

Update a closet classic by layering the piece in a unique way (done here by pairing a classic tweed jacket with a mesh-fabric, long-sleeve shirt) or an unexpected accessory…like a belt bag.

  • SZYMON BRZÓSKA

    25. Wear Your Sunnies (Even In The Rain)

Even when there’s absolutely no reason to be wearing sunglasses, a great pair can make you feel beautiful. We love this exaggerated cat-eye. Even though the sun was not shining, the wearer certainly was.

  • SZYMON BRZÓSKA

    26. Go Full Fringe

Sweaters don’t have to be boring, as this fantastically fringed one demonstrates.

  • SZYMON BRZÓSKA

    27. Remember Shape

Trade your carryall for a handbag with an interesting shape, like a Mark Cross box bag or a structured, ladylike, top-handle.

  • SZYMON BRZÓSKA

    28. Cape It

The caped coat never gets old. Look business-bossy by pairing a suit with a cashmere coat draped around your shoulders. Because you’re TOO DAMN BUSY to put your arms through those sleeves.

  • SZYMON BRZÓSKA

    29. Dig Out Your Favorite Spring Shirt

It’s always refreshing to see something springy despite the freezing cold weather. This peplum smock is clearly off-season, but when layered with a black, long-sleeved shirt underneath, becomes a fabulous winter look.

    30. Plastic Fantastic

The weather at NYFW has been rough (read: rainy). An at first strange idea, but one that’s catching on fast with the fashion set: reuse a plastic bag. PVC, plastic, and lucite bags are all over the street-style blogs.

  • SZYMON BRZÓSKA

    31. High Fashion Pinstripe

Find a pinstripe in an unexpected colorway, like this, in maroon and blue.

  • SZYMON BRZÓSKA

    32. Mixing Pink and Red

Pink and red can look beautiful when mixed together. Caroline Issa proves this is a look easily accomplished without going all out. Just adding a small accessory does the trick.

  • SZYMON BRZÓSKA

    33. Invest In Your Feet

You can wear the simplest outfit ever if you’re got a great shoe. This cowboy boot accented with gold flames is a perfect example. Just add jeans.

  • SZYMON BRZÓSKA

    34. Off-The-Shoulder

Relax! If you’re running around and you feel your favorite puffer sliding off your shoulders, go with it! It’s actually a look.

  • SZYMON BRZÓSKA

    35. Don’t Forget The Details

Sometimes the best part of your look can be your lipstick. Case in point: the pairing of this red sweatshirt and purple lipstick. Winning.

  • SZYMON BRZÓSKA

    36. Wear Your Bag in a New Way

Don’t invest hundreds of dollars buying a new bag just because. Wear that chic belt bag you bought last season in a new way to make it feel fresh.

  • SZYMON BRZÓSKA

    37. Find a Friend

The chicest accessory this season? A pal to lug around to all the shows.

  • SZYMON BRZÓSKA

    38. Go for Texture

A black pant is a black pant is a black pant…unless it’s an alligator-stamped leather pant, of course.

  • SZYMON BRZÓSKA

    39. Upgrade Your Sweats

If we learned anything from the Juicy Couture show, it’s that you can wear track pants out of the gym. Just add the right jacket and you’re good to go.

    40. Make a Statement with Leather

Don’t be afraid to wear head-to-toe leather. Reach for baggy pieces to soften things up.

  • SZYMON BRZÓSKA

    41. Upgrade Your Crossbody Bag

Crossbody bags are no longer reserved for tiny satchels. Sling a fanny pack or even a tote across your chest.

  • SZYMON BRZÓSKA

    42. Invest in Chic Rain Boots

Rainy weather shouldn’t slow down your style. Make sure you have a cute pair of rain boots that stop just above the ankle and don’t forget to have fun with color.

  • SZYMON BRZÓSKA

    43. Weatherproof Your Accessories, Too

A chic PVC bag will protect your precious investments from rain and snow.

  • SZYMON BRZÓSKA FOR INSTYLE

    44. Think Pastels in the Winter

It’s easy to dress in all black when it’s gloomy outside. But a pastel palette will help you win best-dressed, especially if it involves lilac boots.

  • SZYMON BRZÓSKA

    45. Reach for Metallics

Silver is fun, and cozy fabrics help to balance out the shine.

  • SZYMON BRZÓSKA FOR INSTYLE

    46. Skip the Umberella

You’ve got enough to carry without having to juggle an umbrella, too. Make your bucket hat do the rain repelling for you.

  • SZYMON BRZÓSKA FOR INSTYLE

    47. Show Off That Waist

Boxy silhouettes are chic, but in case you hadn’t heard, belts are back.

  • SZYMON BRZÓSKA FOR INSTYLE

    48. Grab Those White Boots

You can’t go wrong with a pair of white boots, especially when paired with matching stockings. Here’s the perfect example of how they can take something like a classic suit to the next level.

  • SZYMON BRZÓSKA FOR INSTYLE

    49. Yellow Is Gold

In a crowd of black jackets, a marigold dress steals the show. Balance it with comfortable white sneakers.
