Plenty of movies and TV shows alike have made fashion a part of the punch line, but few have done so with the enduring humor of Absolutely Fabulous. Since 1992, Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley have portrayed the hard-partying and harder-drinking duo of Edina Monsoon and Patsy Stone, a reckless, hapless, and designer-obsessed pair whose misadventures have set the standard for sartorial satire. Let’s be honest, the business of clothing and accessories—and being really, really good-looking—is often superficial, ridiculous, and ripe for a send-up, and together Edina and Patsy have lampooned everything from celebrity gossip, fad diets, and It bags to designer exits. If it’s been written about in a women’s magazine in the past two decades, Saunders and Lumley have provided tongue-in-cheek commentary via AbFab.
Though the series officially ended in 1996, Patsy and Edina are set to take their antics to the big screen with Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie, a cheeky, celebrity cameo–filled romp in which everyone’s favorite sweetie darlings accidentally kill Kate Moss—oops!—and are subsequently ousted from the industry. Even after getting kicked out of the glitterati and threatened by notably Zen designers like Stella McCartney, the pair manage to get up to trouble—and in Pierre Cardin’s Bubble Palace, no less! Though the film’s full plot has yet to be revealed, we doubt Patsy and Edina can steer clear of fashion (or champagne) for any length of time. As we wait for their madcap return, a look at six of the best fashion lessons they’ve taught us. Study up!
1. When you find a signature look, stick to it.
2. You don’t always need the latest trend.
3. Lacroix, sweetie darling!
4. Confidence is your best accessory.
5. There is such a thing as front row etiquette.
6. Street style isn’t for everyone.
