Few models make their runway debut before entering middle school, but then again, few models have Simon Porte Jacquemus as their relative. For Spring 2016, the designer asked his 10-year-old cousin, Jean, to perform in his show, first pushing a giant red ball, then walking in an oversize tie, and finally following out two models carrying a white, cloud-like puff. Jean was up for the task, explaining to Vogue.com that he was happy to be in his cousin’s show not only because he enjoys working with him, but also because, he noted, “I was happy to miss school.”
Being a part of a performance piece is no simple task, especially for a youngster, but Jean was ready to take on the endeavor like a professional. He admitted that he was not one bit nervous before the show and took the instructions he received from the Jacquemus team to heart. “For the big ball and the tie, I had to look sad, and people had to believe it was hard to do,” he said of his directives. From a spectator’s standpoint, we’d say he nailed it.
This isn’t Jean’s first taste of modeling, either. He starred in Jacquemus’s Resort 2016 lookbook alongside iconic actress Joana Preiss. At only 10 years old, he still has some time to decide on a career path, but a job in the fashion industry doesn’t seem too farfetched. “I don’t know. I want to work in the trees,” he says sweetly when asked what he wants to be when he grows up, though he admits he has an interest in fashion and would love to work with his cousin again soon. “At the end when I came out with Simon, I was happy that people were clapping and were happy.” Sounds like he’s hooked.
