Fans of Wes Anderson’s film The Life Aquatic may not remember the movie’s protagonist, Steve Zissou, donning much formalwear. And, well, that’s because he didn’t. He was an oceanographer, after all, and there isn’t much use for a tuxedo when you’re out on the open seas. But there’s no denying that the director’s aesthetic has had a strong influence on the fashion community. The latest evidence of this is the capsule collection that AMI designer Alexandre Mattiussi debuted on Mr Porter.com today.
While Mattiussi used The Life Aquatic as a starting point, the nine piece offering steers clear of feeling costume-y. In fact, the heart of the collection is based on traditional formalwear—with a relaxed twist, of course. So while you can surely pick up the black tuxedo or midnight blue evening jacket, don’t be afraid to finish off your outfit with Zissou-approved socks or a beanie in bright red. Jacques Cousteau would be proud.
