On Friday, the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced that next spring’s exhibit at the Anna Wintour Costume Center is “Chinese Whispers: Tales of the East in Art, Film, and Fashion.” Here, we take a look back at three red-carpet regulars who have adapted Eastern influence to their gala style.
Nicole Kidman captivated in a chartreuse evening dress by John Galliano for Christian Dior Couture at the 1997 Academy Awards—prompting a resurgence in Asian-inspired eveningwear. Fan Bingbing (a red-carpet regular who’s topped Forbes China’s Celebrity 100 list for two consecutive years) also made a splash in Christopher Bu’s gown, which married traditional Western style with Chinese accents. The motif mimics patterns found on Chinese ceramics—as does an evening dress by Roberto Cavalli from his fall 2005 collection, first sported by Victoria Beckham at Elton John’s White Tie and Tiara Ball.
