In the weeks following the September 11 attacks, I went with some friends to see Mariah Carey in her vehicle Glitter. The film, which had the misfortune of being released 10 days after the disaster, was a real stinker (it makes Burlesque seem like Citizen Kane), but we wanted something dopey to cheer us up—and what could be more redemptive in hard times than the notion of glitter itself, or sequins, or gold, or any small thing that shines and gleams?
If the events this week have made you want to rage against the dying of the light—or maybe stop cursing the darkness and light a candle—what better way to lift your spirits, to fight the good fight, than to deck yourself in something silly, something sparkly, and sally forth to face another day?
So why not don a silvery backless Vetements confection, or a shimmering Dolce & Gabbana extravaganza bedecked with organza flowers! Slither into a gleaming Ashish mini and clomp around in blindingly bright Giambattista Valli platform sandals! Sling a golden sequined Saint Laurent cardi over your shoulders! Scandalize the neighborhood in your Alberta Ferretti Lurex sheer lace pants!
Above all—don’t despair. Remember what our good friend Oscar Wilde used to say: We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.
