Alexander Wang went out with a bang. The casting at Wang’s final Balenciaga show highlighted the designer’s continued influence on the world of modeling, via a lineup of women he helped to launch. Selected by casting director Anita Bitton, Wang’s Spring 2016 collection was comprised primarily of the models who had kicked off their careers with him. Starting with the sultry Anna Ewers, he sent wave after wave of Wang-approved superstars down his runway. Of-the-moment models Ewers, Lexi Boling, and Vanessa Moody all began their careers with him, while buzzed-about newcomers Frida Westerlund, Annika Krijt, Elizabeth Davison, and Peyton Knight also took their very first runway steps on Wang’s catwalks. Adding to the excitement was the arrival of Spanish model Afrodita Dorado Domínguez, who made her debut today at Balenciaga.
Wang and Bitton looked beyond fashion, too, selecting muses who capture the It-girl ethos of Balenciaga’s clientele. Actresses Zoë Kravitz—a longtime Wang aficionada—Bella Heathcote, Nicola Peltz, and Riley Keough often sport Wang’s creations on the red carpet, so their presence on his runway was fitting. Newcomers like Sophie Kennedy Clark and Julia Garner represented the next generation of starlets, while Suki Waterhouse showcased her runway prowess. With strains of The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Going Back to Cali” and a Snoop Dogg soundtrack playing in the background, Wang and Bitton left the audience ebullient—and eager to see what they’d pull off next.
